Three passengers were killed, and more than 10 others were injured after a speeding bus collided with a stationary truck on National Highway 130 between Raipur and Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh early Monday, officials said.
The accident occurred at around 5.30 a.m. near Darchura village, within the jurisdiction of Simga police station.
According to police, the bus was travelling from Raipur to Ambikapur with approximately 22 passengers on board when it rammed into the rear of a broken-down truck parked on the highway near a petrol pump.
The collision was severe, leaving the front section of the bus extensively damaged. Most passengers were reportedly asleep when the accident occurred and had little time to react.
Rescue Teams Use Gas Cutters to Free Trapped Passengers
The impact left several passengers trapped inside the mangled bus, prompting an urgent rescue operation. Local residents gathered at the scene after hearing cries for help.
Police and emergency response teams reached the spot and began rescue and relief efforts. Personnel used gas cutters to cut through the damaged metal structure and pull out passengers trapped inside the vehicle.
The injured were subsequently taken to the government hospital in Simga for treatment. Authorities were working to establish the identities of those killed and injured.
Officials cautioned that the casualty figures could rise depending on the condition of passengers who sustained critical injuries.
Passengers’ belongings were scattered across the accident site, reflecting the force of the collision.
Probe Underway Into Cause of Accident
Preliminary accounts suggest that the bus was being driven at high speed when it struck the stationary truck. However, authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
Police have launched a detailed probe while rescue teams and medical personnel continue to focus on assisting the injured.
The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns along the Raipur-Bilaspur highway stretch, where authorities have reported recurring accidents.
