Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday called for stronger coordination among police forces across southern states, emphasising the need for effective cross-border cooperation to tackle criminal act.
Addressing a meeting of the Southern Regional Police Coordination Committee (SRPCC) at Hyderabad's Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), Reddy said police departments must establish robust systems for sharing information, resources and expertise across state boundaries.
The meeting was attended by Directors-General and Inspectors-General of Police from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, along with representatives from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Puducherry and Lakshadweep, as well as senior officials from Central agencies.
Reddy said police forces had a shared responsibility to make South India a secure region and reiterated Telangana's willingness to share its technological infrastructure and ICCC systems with neighbouring states.
He stressed that public safety depended on professional, impartial and ethically accountable policing. With crime patterns continuing to evolve, he said, policing strategies must adapt through sustained reforms, technology adoption and training.
The Chief Minister described investment in police resources as an investment in public safety and a better society. He also highlighted administrative and organisational changes introduced by the Telangana government to improve policing.
According to Reddy, Hyderabad's police administration has been reorganised into three commissionerates, allowing each Police Commissioner to focus on a defined jurisdiction. He also cited specialised units, including HYDRAA, EAGLE and T-SAFE, which were established to address specific public safety and law enforcement challenges.
Highlighting key priorities, Reddy pointed to cybercrime, drug trafficking and traffic management as areas requiring greater technological integration and specialised training.
He said Telangana had received recognition for its efforts to combat cybercrime and drug-related offences. The Chief Minister also referred to the state's performance in cybercrime control during a PRAGATI review meeting chaired by the Prime Minister and said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had commended Telangana Police for their efforts against Naxalism.
Reddy added that the EAGLE unit had received a score of more than 80 per cent from the Central government for its performance in drug control. He also highlighted the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau's work in recovering money lost by cybercrime victims and returning it to them.
The Chief Minister announced that the state had launched TG-SAFE, a unit modelled on the US Food and Drug Administration, to coordinate efforts by different departments to tackle food adulteration and regulate pharmaceuticals.
He also highlighted HYDRAA's activities in protecting and restoring lakes, ponds and other water bodies, as well as safeguarding government and public assets.
Reddy further said Telangana had become the first state in the country to appoint transgender individuals as traffic assistants in the Hyderabad Traffic Police, presenting the initiative as part of the state's policing measures.
Alongside institutional reforms, the Chief Minister emphasised the importance of police welfare, noting that personnel work under demanding conditions to protect the public. He said supporting officers and safeguarding the future of their families remained a priority for the state government.
Senior officials attending the meeting included Telangana DGP C.V. Anand, Karnataka DGP M.A. Saleem, Tamil Nadu DGP Mahesh Aggarwal, Puducherry DGP Shalini Singh, Lakshadweep ADG B. Shankar Jaiswal, Kerala IG Ajitha Begum and Andhra Pradesh IGP Ravi Krishna. EAGLE Director Sandeep Shandilya and Telangana Cyber Security Bureau Director Shikha Goel were also present.
