Bihar Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Friday accused the state government of misusing the police to target opposition leaders and workers after officers visited the residence.
Tejashwi shared a video of the incident on social media. The footage, reportedly recorded at the residence of Sanjeev Kumar and his brother Rajiv Kumar, shows police personnel checking the identity documents of people gathered outside the house.
Sanjeev Kumar is the RJD candidate from the Patna Teachers’ constituency in the ongoing Legislative Council elections.
According to the footage, a police team attempted to enter the premises, prompting objections from the candidate’s supporters, who demanded to see official authorisation for the search.
A police officer is heard explaining that the team had received information about outsiders staying at the residence after the permitted campaigning period had ended. The officer said the police would verify the individuals’ identities and leave if no irregularities were found.
In his social media post, Tejashwi alleged that the police had arrived without a search warrant and were attempting to intimidate the RJD candidate and his supporters. He asserted that such actions would not weaken the party and said RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, along with its leaders and workers, would not be intimidated by the government.
Tejashwi also criticised the state leadership and questioned the timing of the police visit, which took place shortly before polling.
Separately, Sanjeev Kumar’s supporters alleged that BJP candidate and incumbent Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Naval Kishore Yadav had arranged hundreds of fake voters and brought them to Patna. They questioned why the police had visited the RJD candidate’s residence while, according to them, no comparable action had been taken at the BJP candidate’s premises.
The allegations concerning fake voters and the alleged misuse of police could not be independently verified.
The police visit reportedly took place around midnight and led to a heated exchange between officers and the RJD candidate’s supporters. Police maintained that they had received information about outsiders staying at the premises after the campaign period ended and needed to verify their identities.
