Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds is likely in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Erode districts on Thursday, according to the Meteorological Department.
The weather system responsible is a trough extending from south interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar through Tamil Nadu. Under its influence, the three western districts are expected to receive heavy showers, while several other parts of the state could witness moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
The department has identified Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Erode as the areas likely to experience the heaviest rainfall. Strong winds may accompany the showers in these districts.
Moderate rain with thunderstorms is forecast in Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirupattur, Dindigul, Madurai and Virudhunagar. Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari are also likely to receive moderate showers along with thunder and lightning.
Rainfall is expected to extend beyond western Tamil Nadu into parts of the central and southern regions, although its intensity is likely to vary across districts. While heavy rain is forecast in the three western districts, moderate showers and thunderstorms are expected elsewhere.
Several other parts of Tamil Nadu may receive light to moderate rain at a few places. Similar weather conditions are likely in Puducherry and Karaikal, where light to moderate showers have been forecast.
In Chennai, the department has forecast a possibility of light rain during the evening or night. The city is not expected to experience the heavy rainfall predicted for Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Erode.
Overall, Thursday's forecast points to varied weather conditions across Tamil Nadu, with heavy rain and strong winds in parts of western Tamil Nadu, thunderstorms in several central and southern districts and lighter showers in other areas.
The trough extending across the state is the primary weather feature associated with the expected rainfall, with the department linking its influence to the possibility of heavy showers in Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Erode.
