Heavy rainfall is likely in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris for three consecutive days from Thursday, with thunderstorms expected in the hill regions and moderate showers forecast across several other parts of Tamil Nadu.

The Meteorological Department said a low-pressure system over interior Tamil Nadu and southern Karnataka is influencing weather conditions across the state.

The hill areas of Coimbatore district and the Nilgiris are likely to receive heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning on Thursday, with the wet conditions expected to continue through Friday and Saturday.

According to the forecast, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris are likely to receive heavy rainfall on both Friday and Saturday as well. Theni has also been included in the heavy-rain forecast for the two days, while Kanyakumari is expected to receive heavy showers on Friday.

The three-day forecast covers both the western hill districts and parts of southern Tamil Nadu, with rainfall activity expected to extend across a wider area.

For Thursday, moderate rainfall has been forecast in several southern districts, the Cauvery delta and interior parts of the state. Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga are among the districts expected to receive moderate showers.

The forecast also includes Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai, along with Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchi, Karur, Namakkal, Erode and Salem.

While moderate rain is expected across these districts, the heavier spells are likely to remain concentrated in the hill areas of Coimbatore and the Nilgiris.

Chennai and its suburban areas are likely to receive moderate rainfall during the evening or night on Thursday, the Meteorological Department said.

The overall three-day outlook points to continued rainfall activity in western Tamil Nadu, with Coimbatore and the Nilgiris remaining under the heavy-rain forecast throughout the period. Theni is expected to see heavy rain on Friday and Saturday, while Kanyakumari is included in the forecast for Friday.
