Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged people across the state to wear khadi and purchase Gramodyog products as part of the Gandhi Jayanti celebrations on October 2.

In a statement issued ahead of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, Vijay appealed to school and college students, government employees, young people and the wider public to choose khadi clothing and products made through village industries.

The Chief Minister linked the appeal to Gandhi Jayanti's significance, saying the occasion provides an opportunity to remember India's freedom struggle as well as values associated with Gandhi, including simplicity, self-reliance and humanity.

Vijay said purchasing khadi can provide recognition and support to handloom workers, while greater use of locally produced goods could also encourage home-based production.

As part of efforts to encourage consumers, government-run khadi outlets in Tamil Nadu are offering a 30 per cent discount on dress materials, according to the Chief Minister's statement.

The appeal extends beyond clothing, with Vijay encouraging people to use Gramodyog products and support goods produced through traditional village industries.

The Chief Minister said such purchases could contribute to improving the livelihoods of people working in weaving, handicrafts and related traditional occupations.

By specifically appealing to students and young people alongside government employees and other members of the public, Vijay called for wider participation in the promotion of khadi and village-industry products.

The Gandhi Jayanti message therefore combines remembrance of the country's freedom movement with an appeal to support local production and traditional livelihoods through everyday consumer choices.
