Switzerland's President Guy Parmelin is scheduled to visit Noida International Airport in Jewar on Tuesday as part of his three-day state visit to India, prompting authorities to strengthen security arrangements.
Parmelin, who is visiting India from October 5 to 7, is expected to reach the airport at around 11.30 a.m. and spend approximately two to two-and-a-half hours at the facility.
During his visit, the Swiss President is scheduled to tour the airport and review its passenger and business facilities, including the cargo terminal. He is also expected to interact with airport officials.
Security has been intensified along expressways and major roads leading towards Jewar. Additional police personnel have been deployed at sensitive locations, key intersections and important junctions, while traffic police have been stationed along the route to regulate vehicle movement during the VIP visit.
Authorities have also imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles along certain stretches of the route as part of the security arrangements.
The visit comes a day after Parmelin held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi. Discussions during the meetings covered areas including trade, investment, infrastructure, research and other aspects of bilateral cooperation.
The Swiss President is travelling with a high-level delegation comprising representatives from the business and academic sectors. His visit also coincides with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) coming into force.
The airport has a direct Swiss connection through its operator, Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG.
During the visit, attention is expected to focus on the airport's passenger and cargo infrastructure as well as its operational facilities. The programme also highlights the potential for greater cooperation between India and Switzerland in areas such as aviation, infrastructure and technology.
