Congress leader Sachin Pilot and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday criticised the Punjab government following a shooting incident in Moga that left two people dead and three injured.
The incident occurred in the Angadpura locality, where unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire on a group of people sitting outside a shop before fleeing the scene in a black SUV.
Pilot expressed concern over the shooting, describing it as indicative of wider challenges involving governance, public safety and accountability in Punjab.
“Deeply disturbing to learn about the open firing in Moga. The tragic state of affairs in Punjab is not just a law and order issue, but a reflection of the deepening crisis of governance, public safety, and accountability that demands urgent attention,” he wrote in a post on X.
Badal Questions Punjab’s Law and Order Situation
Badal also condemned the shooting and targeted the Bhagwant Mann-led government over the incident.
In a post on X, the SAD chief described the broad-daylight firing as horrifying and said the violence had left innocent people critically injured. He questioned the government’s handling of law and order, alleging that criminals were operating without fear and that law enforcement agencies were unable to prevent such incidents.
Badal also criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asking whether the incident reflected the government’s vision of “Rangla Punjab”.
His remarks came amid growing political criticism following the fatal shooting.
Two Dead, Three Injured in Shopfront Shooting
According to preliminary information, the victims were sitting outside a shop in Angadpura when a black SUV arrived at the location. The occupants allegedly fired indiscriminately at the group before escaping.
Five people were injured in the attack. Four sustained bullet wounds, while another reportedly suffered injuries from bullet splinters. Two of the injured later died, while the remaining victims were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Initial information suggests that an old enmity may have triggered the attack. However, police have yet to establish the exact motive.
Police Launch Investigation
Moga police chief Sartaj Singh Chahal said a police team reached the spot after receiving information about the shooting.
An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible. The precise motive and sequence of events remain under investigation.
