Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Wednesday claimed that the BJP had won the confidence of voters in the Jodhpur division during the recent civic body elections, while accusing the Congress of suffering.
Speaking at a public meeting in Chohtan, Barmer district, Sharma said local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions play a crucial role in delivering development at the grassroots. He said strengthening these institutions would effectively add a “third engine” to the BJP’s existing “double-engine government” and help advance the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” and “Viksit Rajasthan”.
Drawing on his rural background, Sharma said he understood the challenges faced by farmers and economically weaker sections. He accused Congress leaders of relying on caste and religious issues and making allegations because, he claimed, they lacked substantive issues to raise.
Sharma also alleged that the Congress resorts to questioning Electronic Voting Machines whenever it loses an election. Referring to the civic body polls, he said Congress leaders had earlier accused the BJP of using the administration for electoral advantage, but the results, according to him, demonstrated that voters had backed the BJP.
On employment, the Chief Minister targeted the previous Congress government over alleged paper leaks, saying they had damaged the prospects of young job aspirants. He claimed that no recruitment paper leak had occurred during the BJP government's tenure of nearly three years.
Sharma said the BJP had promised four lakh government jobs and had already issued appointment letters for more than 1.89 lakh posts. Recruitment for another 1.22 lakh positions was underway, while a recruitment calendar covering a further 1.25 lakh posts had also been announced, he said.
Taking another swipe at the opposition, Sharma told Congress leaders to keep a pen and notebook ready to track the government's recruitment figures. “If their maths is weak, we can even arrange tuition for them,” he said.
The Chief Minister also mocked Congress leaders for allegedly failing to recognise development work in the state, suggesting that they should have their eyesight checked or use properly prescribed spectacles.
Sharma further criticised the previous Congress government over the conduct of civic body and Panchayati Raj elections, alleging that the Model Code of Conduct was repeatedly imposed in a manner that affected development work. He also claimed that the previous government spent more than a month stationed in Jaisalmer.
With Panchayati Raj elections approaching, Sharma said the BJP would continue its development agenda through local institutions. He expressed confidence that voters would once again support the BJP and said the party's “lotus” would bloom in the upcoming elections.
