Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Monday criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remarks concerning PM Modi's late father.
In a social media post late Sunday, Sharma alleged that repeated electoral defeats had pushed the Congress away from policy-based political debate and towards language that undermined standards of public discourse.
Condemning Kharge’s remarks, the Chief Minister questioned whether the Congress’s political strategy had become centred on personal insults against the families of political opponents.
“Whether it is targeting a father or a mother, has Congress politics now been reduced solely to personal insults?” Sharma said.
He further accused the opposition party of resorting to abusive language instead of examining the reasons behind its electoral setbacks.
Sharma said voters in what he described as a “New India” respond to political conduct through their electoral choices, adding that personal attacks would not help a party regain public support.
Kharge’s Remarks in Patna Trigger Political Row
The controversy arose on October 25 during an event in Patna, Bihar, organised to mark the 139th birth anniversary of the state’s first Chief Minister, Sri Krishna Singh.
During his address, Kharge criticised the Central government over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged administrative irregularities.
According to reports, an audience member interrupted his speech, saying that Prime Minister Modi would not leave power unless there was a rebellion.
Kharge responded with the remark, “Even Modi’s father will have to go!”
The statement prompted a political backlash, with BJP leaders accusing the Congress president of making an objectionable personal remark about the Prime Minister and his late father. The BJP also announced plans to stage protests over the comments.
Rajasthan BJP Chief Questions Political Decorum
Rajasthan BJP president Madan Rathore also condemned Kharge’s statement, arguing that the language used by senior political leaders should reflect the standards expected in a democratic system.
Rathore questioned whether such remarks directed at the country’s Prime Minister were consistent with democratic norms and called for greater restraint and civility in political exchanges.
He also raised concerns about a separate incident at the Patna event in which a person was allegedly assaulted, questioning the conduct surrounding the gathering.
Other BJP leaders and elected representatives in Rajasthan joined the criticism, arguing that personal remarks involving the families of senior political figures undermined democratic traditions. They demanded a public apology from the Congress leadership.
BJP Leaders Prepare to Take Issue to Public
BJP leaders said the controversy had generated anger among party workers in Jaipur and other district headquarters, with preparations reportedly underway to raise the issue publicly.
The dispute has added to the ongoing political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress, extending beyond Bihar to Rajasthan.
Some BJP workers indicated that the party could seek to highlight the controversy during its political campaign ahead of upcoming panchayat and local body elections in Rajasthan.
