An Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police, posted with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Amritsar, was shot at by three unidentified motorcycle-borne men while he was returning home from duty, police said.

The incident took place near a canal bridge close to Jagdev Khurd village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Ajnala police station. ASI Sukhchain Singh was riding his motorcycle when the three men, travelling on another motorcycle, allegedly opened fire at him from close range.

According to police, a bullet struck Singh in the left shoulder and passed through. He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

DSP Dharmendra Kalyan said the officer was returning home from duty when the attack occurred near his village. Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation to identify and arrest those responsible. The motive behind the shooting has not yet been established.

The incident drew a response from BJP MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, who condemned the shooting and questioned the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government over the safety of police personnel and the wider law and order situation in the state.

In a post on X, Bittu alleged that incidents involving shootings, killings, extortion and attacks on police personnel were occurring repeatedly in Punjab. He questioned how ordinary citizens could feel secure if police personnel themselves were being targeted and called on the state government to take decisive action.

Bittu also alleged that the situation was inconsistent with the Punjab government's claims of improving security and criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over what he described as a focus on publicity and politics.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and efforts are underway to identify the three assailants.
