Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to tackle drug trafficking in the state, urging the police leadership to take firm action and ensure accountability.
Jakhar made the remarks on Monday after meeting Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, along with Amandeep Kaur, Lovepreet Singh's sister, and other family members. Lovepreet was found dead in Abohar on September 14.
The family alleged that Lovepreet had been murdered by drug traffickers and that his body was dumped in bushes. They said they had submitted complaints to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and the DGP through email and speed post on September 19 but had received no justice.
Amandeep Kaur claimed that drugs were being sold openly in the locality and alleged that those involved in the trade had threatened people in the area. The family also expressed concern over reports of minors being drawn into drug peddling.
Jakhar said Amandeep had independently collected CCTV footage relevant to the case and handed it over to the DGP on a pen drive. He alleged that police personnel intimidated people who provided the footage and tried to delete it. These allegations have yet to be independently established.
Demanding that all available digital evidence be preserved, Jakhar called for a legally compliant investigation, including forensic examination of the material, to ensure that crucial evidence was not compromised.
He warned that the family would take its demand for justice to court if authorities did not initiate action within five to seven days.
Jakhar also criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over his visit to France to celebrate his birthday, accusing the government of neglecting Punjab’s drug crisis.
Questioning the effectiveness of the state’s anti-drug policy, the BJP leader referred to the DGP’s announcement on April 28, 2025, that station house officers would be held accountable in cases involving drug recoveries.
“If accountability had been fixed to prevent drug trafficking, where are the results?” he asked.
Jakhar further alleged that district magistrates' orders banning pregabalin were not being adequately enforced, claiming officials had failed to check pharmacies to see whether the restrictions were being followed.
He accused the government of relying on official announcements and paperwork rather than ensuring implementation on the ground. Referring to the alleged misuse of pharmaceutical drugs, he claimed that timely government intervention could have prevented the death of Parwinder Singh Jhona.
The BJP leader also questioned the effectiveness of measures to prevent drugs from being smuggled across the international border.
Raising concerns over the anti-drone system known as “Baaz Akh”, which he said had been installed at a cost of approximately Rs 52 crore, Jakhar pointed to a reported seizure of 25 kg of heroin from a constable deployed with the system.
He questioned whether the constable had acted alone or whether others, including senior police officers or political figures, were involved. No evidence establishing wider involvement was presented in the statement.
Jakhar called on the Punjab government and police leadership to demonstrate concrete results in tackling drug trafficking and ensure that allegations surrounding Lovepreet Singh’s death were investigated thoroughly.
