A police constable was seriously injured after a tractor-trolley allegedly carrying illegally mined gravel struck him while he was attempting to stop the vehicle in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur district.

The incident took place in the Chauth Ka Barwara police station area on Tuesday morning. It comes days after the alleged killing of a forest ranger in Pratapgarh during action against illegal mining.

According to police, Constable Surendra Singh and other personnel from the Chauth Ka Barwara police station were returning from a routine patrol when they spotted a tractor-trolley approaching at high speed on Bhedola Road from Chauth Ka Barwara at around 9 a.m.

Singh reportedly signalled the driver to stop. Instead, police alleged that the driver accelerated towards him and struck the constable. Singh fell onto the road, and the vehicle's wheel subsequently ran over his leg, causing serious injuries.

An elderly woman, identified as around 85-year-old Jumi, was also injured after being hit while walking along the roadside carrying fodder for livestock.

Following the incident, the driver allegedly fled the area with the tractor-trolley. Police personnel and local residents helped take both injured persons to a nearby Community Health Centre for treatment.

The injured constable was provided first aid before being referred to the district hospital. He was later shifted to Jaipur for further treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

Ajit Kumar, Station House Officer of Chauth Ka Barwara police station, said a case has been registered in connection with the incident. The case includes allegations relating to the attempt to run over the constable as well as the illegal mining and transportation of gravel.

Police teams have launched searches and raids in surrounding areas to locate the driver, who remains absconding.

The incident comes amid ongoing judicial scrutiny of illegal gravel mining in the Chambal river region.

The Supreme Court recently granted Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh two weeks to comply with directions concerning the ban on illegal mining in the Chambal region and submit compliance reports.

A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Augustine George Masih and Sandeep Mehta is hearing the matter.

During the proceedings, the Rajasthan government also submitted a report on action taken following the death of Forest Ranger Pratap Singh Chundawat. Chundawat was allegedly run over by a dumper truck on the night of September 21 while attempting to stop illegal mining in Pratapgarh.

The latest incident in Sawai Madhopur has once again highlighted the risks faced by police and other enforcement personnel while taking action against alleged illegal mining and transportation activities in Rajasthan.
