Speculation over a possible alliance between the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has created fresh tensions within Tamil Nadu's ruling coalition, with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.

Reports have suggested that the TVK leadership is exploring an understanding with the PMK following the upcoming Assembly by-elections. There has also been speculation that PMK MLA and party Assembly floor leader Sowmiya Anbumani could be considered for a ministerial position.

However, Sowmiya has publicly dismissed reports of her joining the TVK Cabinet as rumours and urged people not to give them importance. No formal announcement confirming a PMK entry into the ruling coalition has been made.

The speculation has nevertheless raised concerns within the VCK, which is part of the TVK-led government. VCK leader and Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu reiterated that his party would not remain in an alliance that includes the PMK. VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan has also rejected reports of a possible PMK-TVK arrangement.

The developments come ahead of the October 6 Assembly by-elections in Madurantakam and Dharapuram. The PMK has decided not to support any party in the bypolls, a move that has contributed to speculation about whether the party could eventually realign with the ruling TVK.

TVK ministers and functionaries have so far not publicly confirmed an agreement with the PMK. Reports about a possible Cabinet berth for Sowmiya have added to the speculation, although she has directly denied that such a move is being planned.

The proposed expansion would have implications for the existing TVK-led coalition, which includes parties such as the Congress, VCK and Indian Union Muslim League, while the Left parties have also extended support to the government. The alliance was formally presented in September under the name Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance.

For now, the possibility of the PMK joining the TVK-led formation remains unconfirmed. The PMK has not formally announced such a move, while the VCK has publicly opposed its inclusion and Sowmiya Anbumani has rejected reports linking her to a Cabinet position.
