Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, state BJP president Archana Gupta and all BJP legislators from the state in New Delhi on Saturday.
The meeting comes amid an ongoing political dispute over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. BJP legislators are expected to discuss the political situation in Haryana, organisational matters and preparations for upcoming electoral challenges. Reports citing sources have also indicated that the BJP's preparations for the forthcoming Punjab Assembly elections could feature in the interaction.
The Haryana BJP has 48 legislators in the 90-member state Assembly. The MLAs are being led by Saini and Gupta for the meeting with the Prime Minister. Reports said the interaction was scheduled for the afternoon and that the legislators would meet the state leadership in Delhi before proceeding for the meeting with Modi.
The SIR exercise has become a major point of political contention, with Opposition parties raising questions about the revision of electoral rolls. BJP leaders have been responding to the criticism as the debate over the exercise continues.
The meeting also follows a recent organisational change within the BJP in Haryana. Former Union Minister Smriti Irani has replaced Satish Poonia as the party's Haryana in-charge, bringing a new organisational leadership arrangement ahead of the party's upcoming political activities.
Punjab is another issue likely to receive attention, according to reports citing party sources. The BJP has been increasing its political activity in the state ahead of the Assembly elections, with issues including the drug problem, law and order and security featuring prominently in its campaign.
The meeting is also expected to give the central leadership an opportunity to hear directly from Haryana legislators about political and organisational matters in their constituencies and discuss priorities for the BJP's state unit.
The interaction takes place against the backdrop of a wider confrontation between the Opposition and the Election Commission over the SIR process. Opposition parties have criticised the exercise, while the BJP has defended the electoral-roll revision and challenged the allegations being raised against the poll authorities.
The meeting between Modi and Haryana's BJP legislators is therefore expected to cover a mix of state-level political feedback, organisational coordination and preparations for upcoming electoral contests.
