Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from supporters on Wednesday as he arrived at the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha, organised by the BJP as part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, to mark his 25th anniversary.
People greeted Modi by showering flowers, waving BJP flags and raising slogans including 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Modi Ji Ka Swagat Hai'. Several attendees also used their mobile phones to capture his arrival.
Addressing the gathering, BJP National President Nitin Nabin congratulated Modi on completing 25 years in public office and said people were extending their blessings and good wishes so he could continue serving the country.
Nabin said the Prime Minister's long public career had been marked by what he described as dedication and sustained efforts towards development. He said Modi's work over the past 25 years had contributed to greater confidence and self-respect among citizens.
Describing the occasion as significant for BJP workers and Indians, Nabin said Modi's political journey had begun amid challenges and continued through various difficult periods.
According to the BJP president, Modi made public service the central purpose of his life and treated politics and political power as instruments for serving the country.
Nabin also referred to former President Pranab Mukherjee while highlighting Modi's emergence as the BJP's prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He said voters subsequently gave the BJP a strong mandate under Modi's leadership.
The BJP chief also highlighted various government schemes and programmes introduced during Modi's tenure, particularly those aimed at youth, students, women, economically weaker sections and the sports sector.
Modi's 25 years as head of government began on October 7, 2001, when he took oath as Gujarat Chief Minister. He remained in the post until 2014 before moving to national politics and becoming Prime Minister.
His tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister began at a time when the state was dealing with the aftermath of the Bhuj earthquake as well as political and administrative challenges.
As Prime Minister, Modi has overseen an expansion of India's international engagement, with his government placing emphasis on relations with major global powers and a larger role for India in the Global South.
