Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the death of Rupi Soren, mother of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and recalled her efforts towards empowering tribal communities.
Rupi Soren, around 80, died on Wednesday at a hospital in Ranchi, where she had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness. Her condition reportedly deteriorated during the day, following which she was placed on life support. Doctors Deepak Gupta and Ujjwal Rai later confirmed her death.
In a post on X, Modi expressed his condolences to Hemant Soren, his wife Kalpana Soren and the entire family, remembering Rupi Soren for her work among tribal communities.
Her death comes around a year after the passing of Hemant Soren's father, Shibu Soren, who died in Delhi on August 4, 2025. Rupi Soren had remained an important figure within the family following his death.
She married Shibu Soren on January 1, 1962, and stood by him during his long political and social journey. While he was closely involved in the Jharkhand movement, she managed family responsibilities and supported him through the years of struggle.
Shibu Soren was one of the prominent leaders of the Jharkhand movement and among the founding figures of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He also served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand.
The JMM remembered Rupi Soren as a symbol of struggle, sacrifice and patience, saying she remained steadfast alongside Shibu Soren throughout his life and after his death.
The party described her passing as an irreparable loss for Jharkhand and the country, and said her death would be deeply felt by Hemant Soren, his family and people across the state.
