The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is intensifying efforts to upgrade railway infrastructure, strengthen operational efficiency and improve passenger amenities across the Northeastern region, officials said.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said senior railway officials are conducting regular inspections of stations, facilities and ongoing projects to assess progress, address gaps and ensure that infrastructure and passenger services are maintained to required standards.
As part of the exercise, NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava inspected Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram along with senior officials from the railway headquarters and Lumding Division.
During the visit, Shrivastava reviewed the station's overall functioning, infrastructure and development plans, with particular attention to passenger amenities, safety arrangements and operational preparedness. He also inspected facilities available to passengers and assessed arrangements for their smooth movement through the station.
Railway officials briefed the General Manager on existing facilities as well as ongoing and proposed development works. Shrivastava directed them to maintain high standards of cleanliness and passenger convenience and ensure that existing facilities are properly maintained.
He also emphasised the need to maintain reliable operations and consistent service standards as the station's role in serving Mizoram continues to grow.
Shrivastava subsequently carried out a window-trailing inspection along the Sairang-Bairabi section, reviewing track conditions, railway infrastructure, electrification works, newly commissioned facilities and other development activities.
The inspection also focused on identifying further scope for improving station infrastructure and passenger amenities along the route. Officials were instructed to ensure effective utilisation and upkeep of railway assets while prioritising safety, efficiency and passenger comfort.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway connection has significantly strengthened Mizoram's rail connectivity. On September 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang New Railway Line, bringing Aizawl onto India's railway network for the first time.
