MSME, Statistics Ministries Sign Pact to Share Udyam Data and Strengthen Business Statistics

Under the agreement, the MSME Ministry will provide unit-level Udyam Registration data to MoSPI through application programming interfaces (APIs). The two-way API-based system is intended to support the development and maintenance of the National Statistical Business Register (NSBR).

The arrangement will create a structured framework for transferring information from the Udyam Registration ecosystem to MoSPI, with the government expecting the shared data to improve the coverage, consistency and reliability of business information used for statistical purposes.

The government described the Statistical Business Register (SBR) as a central, regularly updated database containing registered statistical units involved in economic activity within a defined geographical area.

The register covers businesses, enterprises, establishments and other economic units, along with key information about them and the relationships between different units.

An SBR plays an important role in the economic statistics system by helping identify the population covered by economic surveys and supporting the selection of samples for such surveys. It can also facilitate the production of business demography statistics and help maintain consistency when information is compiled from multiple sources.

The government said the data-sharing mechanism will contribute to strengthening India's statistical infrastructure and improving the quality and reliability of economic data relating to businesses.

The MoU was signed by Dr Rajneesh, Additional Secretary and Development Commissioner in the Ministry of MSME, and Dr Dalip Singh, Additional Director General in MoSPI, in the presence of senior officials from both ministries.

The initiative brings data generated through the Udyam Registration system into a more structured statistical framework, with the two ministries seeking to improve the availability and consistency of information used to understand India's business and economic landscape.
