Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking Central intervention following a series of deaths linked to suspected spurious liquor consumption in the state.
He has called for an independent investigation, coordinated action against interstate illicit liquor networks and accountability for officials found responsible for lapses.
In his letter dated Tuesday, Patwari questioned the Mohan Yadav-led Madhya Pradesh government’s handling of recurring liquor-related tragedies and urged the Centre to ensure effective action against those involved in the illegal trade.
The Congress leader cited several incidents from previous years, including the deaths of 14 people in Ujjain in October 2020 and 24 people in Morena in January 2021.
He also referred to a liquor-related incident in Mandsaur in 2021, in which more than seven people reportedly died, and 20 deaths linked to suspected spurious liquor in Sagar district in September 2026.
Congress Seeks Probe Into Recent Deaths
Patwari also highlighted recent deaths reported in Chandana and Bisakhana villages in Dewas district, alleging that the state government had failed to prevent repeated tragedies associated with illicit liquor.
The circumstances and causes of the deaths reported in the latest incident remain under investigation.
“The state’s administrative system has completely collapsed,” Patwari said in his letter, calling for Central intervention and accountability.
He argued that the problem could extend beyond individual liquor outlets, alleging the existence of organised networks involved in procuring raw materials, packaging, transportation and distribution.
Patwari called for coordinated action between enforcement agencies in Madhya Pradesh and other states to identify and dismantle such networks.
Demands Independent Investigation and Administrative Review
The Congress leader has sought an independent investigation into liquor-related deaths, a review of the state’s excise administration and a probe into alleged monitoring failures in the Sagar case.
He also demanded action against officials found responsible for negligence, financial assistance for the families of those who died and appropriate medical treatment for affected people.
Patwari further called for those found guilty of involvement in the illegal liquor trade to face punishment under the law.
“People of Madhya Pradesh no longer want assurances; they want results. The deaths due to spurious liquor must stop, and accountability must be fixed not only for the criminals but also for officials found responsible,” he wrote.
The Congress has repeatedly criticised the Madhya Pradesh government over liquor-related deaths, alleging enforcement failures and demanding stronger action against those involved in the illegal trade.
The latest letter escalates the party’s demand for accountability to the Central government, with Patwari seeking coordinated action against illicit liquor networks and scrutiny of the administration’s response to the reported deaths.
