Liechtenstein’s Hereditary Prince Alois on Tuesday said he was honoured to be in India for the European country’s first State Visit to India, adding that Liechtenstein was determined to further strengthen its ties.
Prince Alois was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed him.
Expressing gratitude to President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi for the invitation and warm reception, Prince Alois said, “I am very honoured to be in India on the occasion of Liechtenstein’s first state visit to this remarkable country.”
“This historic visit bears testimony to the importance that Liechtenstein attaches to the relationship with India,” he added.
Highlighting the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with India, which entered into force a year ago, the Prince described it as a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral ties.
“We are determined to build on this momentum and strengthen our ties with India even further,” he said.
Prince Alois also highlighted the potential for expanding economic cooperation in innovation, advanced manufacturing, financial services, education and technology. He noted that both countries possess complementary strengths that could be brought together for their mutual benefit.
Prince Alois arrived in New Delhi from Vadodara on Monday and was received at the airport by Union Minister of State Jayant Singh.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit would provide renewed impetus to bilateral relations between India and Liechtenstein.
Welcoming the Prince, Jayant Singh said he looked forward to strengthening the warm and friendly ties between the two countries and advancing their shared interests through greater cooperation.
Prince Alois is undertaking the State Visit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is accompanied by his wife, Princess Sophie, and a high-level official and business delegation comprising industry leaders.
This is Prince Alois’s second visit to India in 2026, following his participation in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi in February. He had previously visited India in 2010 and 2018.
During his visit, the Prince is scheduled to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
He is also scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House to discuss cooperation in trade and investment, science, technology, innovation and people-to-people exchanges, along with regional and global developments.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Minister of State for Skills Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary are also scheduled to call on the Prince.
President Murmu will meet Prince Alois and host an official banquet in his honour.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit was expected to strengthen engagement between India and Liechtenstein, particularly following the operationalisation of the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement in 2025. The visit is also expected to create opportunities for deeper cooperation and partnerships in new areas of mutual interest.
