Kolkata Police on Tuesday conducted a reconstruction of the alleged assault and public humiliation of a young man and his father in the Sarsuna area of south Kolkata, taking the three accused to the location.
The accused, identified as Pradeep Sarkar and Rahul Barman in the available police account, were taken to the locality wearing shorts, with ropes tied around them during the reconstruction exercise. Senior police officers and personnel from Sarsuna Police Station were present, and the proceedings were videographed.
Investigators said the accused could be taken back to the location if further questioning or face-to-face interrogation becomes necessary.
According to the police investigation, the incident took place on Sunday after a young man allegedly visited his minor girlfriend at Khudiram Palli. Members of the girl's family reportedly found the two together and called the young man's father to the house.
Police said the young man, his father and a friend were allegedly confined, assaulted and verbally abused before being forced to walk naked along a local street. The victims were reportedly beaten with glass bottles and paraded at gunpoint for approximately 50 metres.
The young man's mother was also allegedly assaulted and subsequently underwent a medical examination.
In statements to investigators, members of the victim's family alleged that the girl's relatives gave them three options: face a police case, allow the young man to be shot dead, or walk naked through the streets while the incident was recorded.
The family claimed they chose the third option out of fear for their lives.
Photographs and videos of the alleged incident later circulated on social media, triggering tensions in the locality. On Monday morning, a group of angry residents reportedly attacked and vandalised the young man's house.
Following the incident, police arrested the minor girl's father, mother and uncle.
The reconstruction exercise forms part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged assault, public humiliation and threats. Police are continuing to examine the sequence of events and gather evidence to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
