A Class 9 student was seriously injured after allegedly being attacked by a classmate with a sharp object inside a classroom at South Point High School in south Kolkata on Wednesday.
The incident took place at around 12:29 p.m. while a class teacher was present in the classroom. According to the school, an argument between the two students suddenly escalated, with one student attacking the other and causing substantial injuries.
The injured student began bleeding heavily and was immediately taken by teachers to the school's medical centre. After receiving initial treatment from the nursing staff, senior teachers and other school employees arranged for him to be taken to a nearby private hospital.
His parents were informed and subsequently reached the hospital.
Doctors treating the 15-year-old found that he had suffered a deep wound to his throat as well as several injuries to his left hand. After his condition was stabilised, he was taken into surgery.
The operation, led by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Dipanjan Dey, revealed that the throat injury had extended into the mouth and affected the underlying muscles. Doctors also found damage to the extensor tendon of the student's left index finger, along with cuts to several other fingers.
The surgical team repaired the injuries, and the student's condition was later described as stable.
The exact circumstances that led to the confrontation have not yet been established. However, school sources indicated that an argument over a book may have preceded the attack.
Following the incident, the accused student was removed from the classroom. School psychologists subsequently counselled him before his father took him home.
The school has also submitted a written complaint to Gariahat Police Station. Kolkata Police has begun an investigation and said appropriate legal action would follow based on the complaint.
The incident has caused concern among students, teachers and parents, particularly as the confrontation took place during school hours and inside a classroom.
School authorities said they would provide support to students who witnessed the incident or were otherwise affected by it, with measures aimed at helping them deal with the emotional impact.
The school also reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for students and staff.
