Congress workers in Bengaluru have launched a poster campaign targeting Karnataka BJP president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, describing him as an "RTGS thief" and demanding an apology over his alleged derogatory remarks.
Posters carrying slogans such as "Vijayendra RTGS Villain", "Coward" and "RTGS Thief" have appeared near the residences of former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Vijayendra in Bengaluru.
The campaign follows a controversy over Vijayendra's comments during a public meeting in Davanagere on October 31, when he criticised the Congress over its handling of reservation-related issues and its arguments before the Karnataka High Court in a case concerning the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC).
Vijayendra had used disparaging language while attacking the Congress, accusing its leaders of failing to effectively present their case and of neglecting the interests of disadvantaged communities.
Vijayendra expresses regret over remarks
Responding to the criticism on Tuesday, Vijayendra apologised for his choice of words, saying he had not intended to hurt anyone.
He said he generally avoided using such language at public events and expressed regret if his comments had offended anyone.
However, the BJP leader maintained his criticism of the Congress government, alleging that it had failed to take adequate steps to reform the KPSC and had not presented its arguments effectively before the Karnataka High Court.
He said his remarks were made in the context of his criticism of the government's handling of the matter.
Political confrontation intensifies
The controversy has added to the political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the BJP in Karnataka.
Vijayendra's remarks at Davanagere, which also included criticism of the Congress leadership over reservation policies, KPSC vacancies and rising prices of essential commodities, drew objections from Congress leaders and workers.
Congress members described his language as inappropriate for someone holding a senior organisational position, while protests were reported in different parts of the state.
The poster campaign in Bengaluru marks a further escalation in the exchange between the two parties.
