The Janata Dal (United) has formally sought to disqualify Mokama MLA Anant Singh from the Bihar Legislative Assembly after his six-year expulsion from the party, escalating the political dispute.

JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha visited the Bihar Assembly on Monday and submitted a recommendation letter to Speaker Prem Kumar, accompanied by a 10-page dossier containing documentary evidence, including video footage, against Singh.

Kushwaha alleged that Singh had acted against the party’s interests by campaigning against its official candidate, Neeraj Kumar, during the recent Bihar Legislative Council election for the Patna Graduates’ constituency.

According to the JD(U) state president, Singh openly backed Jan Suraaj candidate Anuj Singh and appealed to voters to support him instead.

JD(U) Cites Campaign Against Its Official Candidate

Kushwaha said Singh had also repeatedly made statements against the party leadership, prompting disciplinary proceedings that culminated in his expulsion for six years.

The JD(U) leader said he visited the Assembly to enquire about the status of the recommendation and met the Assembly Secretary. He indicated that the matter was being processed and that a formal notice was expected.

The party’s move has raised questions about Singh’s future in the Assembly, with the Speaker expected to consider the request under the applicable procedures.

However, expulsion from a political party does not automatically terminate an MLA’s membership of the Assembly. Any disqualification under the anti-defection provisions of the Constitution would require consideration by the competent authority in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

Dispute Escalated During Legislative Council Poll Campaign

The controversy emerged during campaigning for the Legislative Council election, when Singh publicly opposed JD(U) candidate Neeraj Kumar and declared that he would not allow him to win.

He subsequently campaigned for Anuj Singh in areas including Patna, Nalanda and Nawada, further widening the rift with the JD(U) leadership.

The party has cited Singh’s conduct during the election campaign as a key reason for its disciplinary action and subsequent request for disqualification.

Anant Singh’s Wife Also Faces Administrative Action

Meanwhile, Singh’s wife, former MLA Neelam Devi, has reportedly been removed from the state’s 20-Point Programme Implementation Committee. The minister-of-state status previously accorded to her has also been withdrawn.

The developments indicate an escalation in the dispute between the JD(U) and Anant Singh, with the party pursuing action against the legislator’s political position and seeking a review of his Assembly membership.

The next steps will depend on the Speaker’s consideration of the recommendation and the constitutional procedure governing any disqualification.
