External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Friday and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, Jaishankar conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Aliyev.
“Pleased to call on Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, in Baku this morning. Conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi. Discussed strengthening the relationship between our two countries,” Jaishankar said in a post on X, expressing appreciation for Aliyev’s positive sentiments towards closer cooperation.
During his visit, the External Affairs Minister is also scheduled to hold talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart to review bilateral ties and explore avenues for further cooperation.
The meeting follows the presentation of credentials by India's Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abhay Kumar, to President Aliyev on October 16. During the interaction, Kumar reaffirmed India's commitment to expanding bilateral relations and strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
According to the Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan, discussions during the meeting highlighted the longstanding historical and cultural connections between India and Azerbaijan, which continue to provide a foundation for contemporary diplomatic engagement.
Both sides exchanged views on opportunities to expand cooperation across areas of mutual interest and emphasised the importance of building on existing ties of friendship and understanding.
The meeting also referred to the interaction between Prime Minister Modi and President Aliyev on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek on September 1. Ambassador Kumar and Aliyev reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and exploring new avenues of engagement.
Last week, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh visited Azerbaijan to attend the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
Jaishankar's visit marks another high-level diplomatic engagement between the two countries as they seek to advance bilateral cooperation and maintain dialogue on shared interests.
