Jaipur Municipal Corporation Mayor Sunil Kothari conducted a late-night inspection of sanitation arrangements in the city's historic Walled City on Thursday, personally picking up a broom and sweeping a road.
The inspection began near the Hanuman Temple at Sanganeri Gate and covered several busy markets after commercial activity had wound down for the day. Jaipur MP Manju Sharma, councillor Anuradha Maheshwari, Deputy Commissioner Balram Meena, municipal officials and other public representatives accompanied the Mayor.
During the inspection, Kothari reviewed the deployment of sanitation workers, the availability of cleaning equipment, garbage collection arrangements and waste accumulation in commercial areas.
When garbage was spotted on one of the roads, the Mayor took a broom and cleaned the area himself. The exercise was intended to provide a first-hand assessment of how the city's night-time sanitation arrangements were functioning after markets closed.
Kothari said he was personally monitoring the night sanitation operations and that understanding the difficulties faced by sanitation workers was important for improving the system. He said officials were assessing staffing levels, resources and the process of collecting waste generated by commercial establishments.
Based on observations made during the inspections, the civic administration plans to make changes where required to improve the efficiency of sanitation operations.
The Walled City is one of Jaipur's busiest commercial and tourist zones, with substantial quantities of waste generated during the day. Ensuring timely collection and cleaning of roads and areas outside shops remains a key challenge for the municipal authorities.
The Mayor said sanitation arrangements were also being reviewed ahead of the festive season, with the administration seeking to keep the city clean as preparations for Deepotsav and Diwali get underway.
During the visit, Kothari also discussed Jaipur's heritage identity and its UNESCO World Heritage status. He said the municipal administration was holding discussions with officials on heritage-related issues and would take steps to address concerns.
Kothari further said the city administration would work to ensure that Jaipur's UNESCO heritage status is protected.
The inspection comes as the civic body seeks to balance improved sanitation in the densely populated Walled City with the preservation of Jaipur's historic and architectural character.
