YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday accused the state government, led by N. Chandrababu Naidu, of allowing violence after an attack on aparty MP.

Jagan condemned the incident and spoke to Mithun Reddy over the phone to enquire about his condition. He alleged that the ruling coalition was using violence and intimidation amid growing public opposition to its governance.

“Violent politics is nothing new to Chandrababu. He has turned Andhra Pradesh into a jungle raj,” Jagan said, questioning how a Lok Sabha member could face an attack without adequate security.

The former Chief Minister also accused Naidu of misusing official machinery to influence the electoral process and alleged that police had failed to act effectively during incidents of violence.

Jagan said his party would challenge what it described as electoral irregularities through legal and constitutional channels. He called for Central paramilitary forces to be deployed to ensure that local body elections were conducted freely and fairly, adding that the party would approach the courts on the matter.

Violence was reported in Annamayya district on Friday, with vehicles set on fire near the YSRCP office in Rayachoti and Mithun Reddy’s convoy attacked in Punganur.

Tension escalated in Rayachoti after cars parked near the party office were torched. The YSRCP blamed the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for the incident. Workers from the two parties reportedly clashed on the first day of filing nominations for the local body elections.

The arson in Rayachoti followed the attack on Mithun Reddy’s convoy in Punganur, where vehicles were allegedly targeted by TDP supporters. According to the account provided, the vehicles were struck with stones, sticks and iron rods, while some were damaged and overturned.

Mithun Reddy, the YSRCP’s floor leader in the Lok Sabha and MP from Rajampet, reportedly sustained injuries during the incident. He entered the nomination centre amid the unrest. When a group of TDP workers allegedly entered the premises, police escorted the MP into a room as they attempted to control the situation.

Mithun Reddy was later seen with blood on his shirt, while members of his security team also reportedly suffered injuries.

Following the incident, YSRCP Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy submitted separate representations to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Justice of India, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the Chief Election Commissioner, the Andhra Pradesh Governor, the State Election Commissioner and the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.

Gurumoorthy sought urgent intervention by the authorities, an impartial investigation into the attack, preservation of CCTV footage and other evidence, and scrutiny of possible security lapses. He also called for adequate protection for Mithun Reddy, his security personnel and candidates participating in the elections.

His representations referred to an Andhra Pradesh High Court order dated October 15, 2026, concerning safe nomination filing and protection for candidates facing threats.

In his communication to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Gurumoorthy also raised the possibility of parliamentary privilege implications and requested consideration of a reference to the Committee of Privileges.

The YSRCP has urged the authorities to investigate the incident, establish accountability and take steps to protect candidates’ participation in the local body elections. Allegations against the rival party and the police remain subject to investigation and independent verification.
