India is firmly on course to surpass 100 GW of installed wind energy capacity by 2030, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday, highlighting the country's growing potential to emerge.

Speaking at the inauguration of the eighth edition of Windergy India 2026 in Chennai, Joshi said India's installed wind capacity had reached 59.20 GW as of September 30, 2026.

He highlighted the strong growth of the sector, noting that India recorded its highest-ever annual wind capacity addition of 6.05 GW in FY2026. The minister expressed confidence that installations in FY2027 would exceed that record.

"India’s wind energy sector has demonstrated strong momentum, with the highest-ever annual installation of 6.05 GW achieved in FY2026. We are confident that annual wind energy installations will surpass this record in FY2027, marking another important milestone in India’s wind energy journey," Joshi said.

He said sustained growth, a strong project pipeline and supportive policy measures would provide the foundation for achieving the country's target of 100 GW of installed wind capacity by 2030.

"This continued growth will strengthen the foundation for achieving our national ambition of 100 GW of installed wind energy capacity by 2030 and further accelerate the development of India’s wind energy sector," Joshi said.

The minister added that India was well placed to achieve the scale required for the next phase of wind energy expansion, supported by ongoing projects and a policy framework aimed at encouraging investment and development.

Senior officials from the Centre and state governments, representatives of wind energy associations and industry leaders attended the event.

Windergy India 2026 has brought together participants from across the global wind energy industry, with around 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries and 500 delegates. Dedicated country pavilions have also been set up by Denmark, Germany and Spain.

Tamil Nadu Energy Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar highlighted the state's important role in India's wind energy sector and outlined initiatives being undertaken to encourage further development, including the state's repowering policy.

Representatives from several state governments were also felicitated for their contribution to wind energy development, particularly in facilitating land availability, securing timely clearances and addressing Right-of-Way issues.

Several international and domestic collaborations were announced during the inaugural event, including the IWTMA-BWE Global MoU, the IWTMA-PTB Letter of Intent and the IWTMA-OECD collaboration. The agreements are aimed at supporting technological development and strengthening India's wind energy ecosystem.

Two reports, titled *Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu* and *Reimagining Contractual Mechanism for Indian Wind Sector*, were also released during the ceremony.

Participants were encouraged to use Windergy India 2026 as a platform for collaboration, technology exchange and new partnerships. The event emphasised the need for coordinated efforts involving governments, industry, academia, research institutions and international partners to achieve India's long-term wind energy ambitions.
