India, Japan Discuss Stronger Cooperation in Communications, Digital Technology and AI

The discussions took place in Tokyo on Tuesday during a meeting between India’s Ambassador to Japan Nagma Mohamed Mallick and Hideo Fuseida, Director General for International Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

The Indian Embassy in Japan said the two officials exchanged views on the scope for further strengthening bilateral cooperation in communications, digital technology and AI. The meeting comes against the backdrop of an expanding India-Japan digital partnership that already covers areas including semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

AI has emerged as an increasingly important area of cooperation between the two countries. Under the India-Japan Digital Partnership 2.0, New Delhi and Tokyo have identified areas including AI governance, machine learning models, AI use cases, talent development, computing resources and data governance for potential collaboration.

The latest meeting also comes as India and Japan prepare to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. Mallick recently met Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Kazuhiro Fujii on the sidelines of an India-Japan international friendship cricket match in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture.

During that meeting, the two sides discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations. The cricket match was also designated as the inaugural event for celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Mallick had earlier described the Sano event as an important occasion in the bilateral calendar, noting that the two prime ministers had agreed that it would launch the year-long commemorative activities.

India and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1952 and have described their relationship as a Special Strategic and Global Partnership since 2014. Their engagement spans trade and investment, defence, energy, technology, infrastructure and people-to-people exchanges.

Digital cooperation has become an increasingly important component of the relationship. The India-Japan Digital Partnership, established in 2018, has expanded from digital talent and startup cooperation to areas such as semiconductor supply chains and advanced technologies.

The two countries have also been exploring cooperation in AI as part of their broader technology partnership. Their Digital Partnership 2.0 framework calls for work towards safe, secure, responsible and human-centric AI, while also exploring collaboration on AI safety, standards and the development of technology stacks.

Mallick's tenure in Tokyo has also included efforts to strengthen India's economic and technology engagement with Japan. At a May 2026 India-Japan economic forum event, she highlighted opportunities to build resilient supply chains and deepen economic cooperation between the two countries.

The latest talks therefore add to a broader effort by New Delhi and Tokyo to expand their partnership into emerging technology and digital sectors, alongside their established cooperation in economic, strategic and cultural areas.
