India, Iceland Discuss Strengthening Cooperation in Renewable Energy and Green Technology

The discussions took place during a meeting between India's Ambassador to Iceland R. Ravindra and Iceland's Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Johann Pall Johannsson.

The Indian Embassy in Iceland said the two sides discussed the Prosperity Summit, scheduled to be held in New Delhi on October 7, along with opportunities to deepen bilateral engagement in renewable energy and clean and green technologies.

“Ambassador R. Ravindra met with H.E. Johann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate of Iceland. The discussions focused on the upcoming Prosperity Summit, to be held in New Delhi on 7 October, and opportunities for further bilateral engagement in the renewable energy sector and clean/green technology,” the embassy said in a post on X.

The latest meeting comes amid broader efforts by India and Iceland to expand cooperation in areas linked to sustainability, energy and the blue economy.

Last month, Ravindra met Iceland's Minister of Infrastructure Eyjolfur Armannsson, with the discussions covering green shipping, capacity building and fisheries.

According to the Indian Embassy, the ambassador also briefed the Icelandic minister about the upcoming Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue during the August 18 meeting.

India and Iceland have also been exploring cooperation in clean energy and sustainability at the highest political level.

In May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir on the sidelines of the third India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. The two leaders discussed expanding cooperation in clean energy, fisheries, sustainability, geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage.

The meeting was the first between Modi and Frostadottir since she became Iceland's Prime Minister. Modi also congratulated Frostadottir on becoming the youngest Prime Minister in the history of the Nordic island nation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across sectors including geothermal energy, fisheries, innovative technologies, the creative economy, culture, tourism, mobility and people-to-people ties.

They also discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in Arctic research.

Following the meeting, Modi said India valued its relationship with Iceland and highlighted the potential for greater cooperation in clean energy and the blue economy.

“Had a wonderful meeting with Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir of Iceland. India deeply values the friendship with Iceland. We talked about ways to improve ties in areas such as clean energy, fisheries, sustainability, geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage and more,” Modi posted on X.

The Indian Prime Minister also pointed to Iceland's expertise in areas connected with the blue economy and said the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement could provide further momentum to trade and investment ties.

The latest discussions between the two countries underline the growing focus on renewable energy, green technology, maritime cooperation and sustainable development as areas of bilateral engagement.
