The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Theni and Coimbatore districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, even as Cyclone Murasu has weakened after making landfall along the southern Andhra Pradesh coast.
The weather system, which was positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal on November 2, moved north-northwestwards before crossing the coast between Nellore and Narsapur, near Ongole, between 3.30 am and 5.30 am on November 3.
After landfall, the system continued inland and gradually weakened, first into a cyclonic storm and then into a deep depression.
Despite its reduced intensity, the system's associated weather conditions are expected to influence rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days.
Rainfall Expected Across Several Districts
For Wednesday, the IMD has forecast heavy showers at isolated locations in Theni and Coimbatore, while several other parts of the state are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall.
In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected, with moderate showers likely in some areas. Rainfall intensity may vary across localities depending on prevailing atmospheric conditions.
The department has also forecast heavy rainfall on Thursday in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts. Other parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive moderate showers.
Rainfall activity is likely to remain concentrated in parts of western and southern Tamil Nadu, particularly districts bordering the Western Ghats, where local weather conditions could contribute to heavier precipitation.
Although Murasu has weakened considerably, the associated circulation may continue to influence weather conditions over the state. Residents in districts under the heavy rainfall forecast, particularly those in low-lying and vulnerable areas, have been advised to stay alert and follow subsequent weather updates.
The IMD is continuing to monitor the system and issue district-specific forecasts as it weakens further over land.
