The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in three southern Tamil Nadu districts on Thursday, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
According to the weather department, Theni, Dindigul and Madurai are likely to receive heavy showers during the day as an atmospheric disturbance over southern Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas influences weather conditions across the state.
Moderate rainfall is also likely at one or two places in districts adjoining the Western Ghats, as well as parts of northern and southern Tamil Nadu. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may occur in areas experiencing intense rainfall.
Chennai May Receive Light to Moderate Showers
In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected, with light to moderate showers likely in some parts of the city.
Rainfall may vary across localities, with some neighbourhoods receiving brief spells while others remain largely dry.
Seven Southern Districts Face Heavy Rain Forecast on Friday
The IMD has predicted an expansion of heavy rainfall activity across southern Tamil Nadu on Friday.
Seven districts —Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai and Sivaganga—are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
Other parts of the state may see light to moderate showers, suggesting wet weather could persist across several districts.
The forecast comes during Tamil Nadu's northeast monsoon season, which contributes significantly to the state's annual rainfall, particularly across coastal and southern districts.
The seasonal rainfall helps replenish reservoirs, irrigation tanks and groundwater resources. However, intense downpours can also cause difficulties for motorists and residents in low-lying areas, especially where drainage infrastructure is inadequate.
Southern Tamil Nadu is expected to remain the main focus of rainfall activity over the next two days, with heavy showers potentially extending to additional districts on Friday. Residents have been advised to follow official weather bulletins for updates on rainfall intensity, thunderstorms and district-level forecasts.
