The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places in three southern Tamil Nadu districts on Thursday.

According to the forecast, Theni, Dindigul and Madurai are likely to receive heavy showers at isolated locations during the day.

The prevailing atmospheric disturbance over southern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring areas is expected to generate widespread cloud cover and rainfall across several parts of the state.

The weather department has also predicted moderate rainfall at one or two places in districts adjoining the Western Ghats, northern Tamil Nadu and southern parts of the state. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely in areas experiencing intense rainfall.

Chennai May Receive Light to Moderate Showers

In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are expected, with light to moderate rainfall likely in some parts of the city.

Rainfall intensity may vary across neighbourhoods, with some areas receiving brief showers while others could remain largely dry.

Seven Southern Districts on Alert for Friday Rain

The IMD has forecast an expansion of heavy rainfall activity across southern Tamil Nadu on Friday.

Seven districts — Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai and Sivaganga — are likely to receive heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Other parts of the state may experience light to moderate showers, suggesting that wet weather conditions are likely to continue across several districts.

The forecast comes during Tamil Nadu's northeast monsoon season, which contributes significantly to the state's annual rainfall, particularly in its coastal and southern regions.

The seasonal rains help replenish reservoirs, irrigation tanks and groundwater resources. However, intense downpours can also cause difficulties for motorists and residents in low-lying areas, particularly in locations with inadequate drainage.

Southern Tamil Nadu is expected to remain the main focus of rainfall activity over the next two days, with heavy showers potentially affecting additional districts on Friday. Residents have been advised to follow official weather bulletins for updates on rainfall intensity, thunderstorms and district-level forecasts.
