Heavy rainfall disrupted normal life across several parts of Tamil Nadu, flooding roads and homes, damaging infrastructure and triggering prolonged power outages, even as the weather department forecast scattered shower.

In Tirupattur district, roads in the Vayampattu area were inundated following heavy rain, leaving motorists struggling to navigate waterlogged stretches. The flooding affected movement and caused inconvenience to residents travelling through the locality.

Urban areas of Sivaganga also experienced heavy rainfall, accompanied by a power outage lasting more than 10 hours. The prolonged interruption added to the difficulties faced by residents amid the adverse weather.

Roads Damaged and Homes Flooded

In Coimbatore district, heavy showers lashed Puliyamarathupalayam, Sulur and Varapatti. Rainfall damaged a tarred road in Puliyamarathupalayam, affecting local access and creating difficulties for road users.

In the Tharangambadi area of Mayiladuthurai district, students had to make their way to school in the rain, with many arriving drenched after their morning journey.

Kodaikanal witnessed heavy rainfall that significantly increased the flow of water at Silver Cascade waterfall. In the Thoppikanal area, rainwater entered houses, disrupting household activities and affecting residents.

Meanwhile, Army personnel continued clearing and repairing a stretch of hill road leading to Udhagamandalam that had been affected by a landslide. Restoration work was underway to address the damage and improve movement along the route.

Cyclonic System Triggers Weather Alert

The weather department warned that a cyclone moving towards the west-central Bay of Bengal was expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm.

According to the department's bulletin, the system could make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam.

The developing system prompted continued attention to weather conditions along the eastern coast, although the forecast for Tamil Nadu indicated a more limited spread of rainfall over the coming days.

Rain Forecast for Western Ghats and Southern Districts

For Tuesday, the weather department forecast light to moderate rain at isolated places in Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats districts and southern districts. Predominantly dry conditions were expected across the remaining parts of the state.

On Wednesday, isolated light to moderate showers were likely over the Western Ghats districts, while parts of southern Tamil Nadu could receive light rain. Other districts were expected to remain largely dry.

Chennai was forecast to experience partly cloudy skies on Tuesday, with light to moderate rain possible in some areas.

The forecast suggests a narrower distribution of rainfall over the next two days following downpours that left several districts grappling with waterlogging, damaged roads, flooded homes and electricity disruptions.
