An Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police, posted with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Amritsar, was shot at by three unidentified motorcycle-borne men while returning home after duty, police said.
The officer, identified as Sukhchain Singh, was travelling towards his home in Jagdev Khurd village under Ajnala police station limits when the incident occurred near a canal bridge. The assailants, who were riding another motorcycle, allegedly opened fire at him before fleeing the spot.
According to police, a bullet struck Singh’s left shoulder and passed through. He was taken to the Civil Hospital in Ajnala for treatment. Police have registered an FIR against unidentified persons and are examining multiple angles to establish the identity of the attackers and determine the motive behind the shooting.
The shooting took place while Singh was returning from his duty at GRP Amritsar. Police said he was riding his motorcycle and was in plain clothes at the time of the attack. Officials are also examining available evidence and surveillance footage as part of the investigation.
The incident prompted a response from BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, who condemned the attack and questioned the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government over the safety of police personnel and the broader law and order situation in the state.
Bittu alleged that incidents involving shootings, killings and extortion were continuing to occur in Punjab and questioned how ordinary citizens could feel secure when police personnel were themselves being targeted. He also criticised the state government over what he described as a failure to adequately address attacks on members of the police force.
The shooting comes shortly after another fatal attack on a Punjab Police ASI in Amritsar. ASI Harjit Singh was killed after being shot by motorcycle-borne assailants at Bhagtanwala grain market on the intervening night of September 18 and 19.
Police are continuing their investigation into the latest incident, with the identities of the three attackers and the motive behind the shooting yet to be established.
