India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 14.7 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2,03,521 crore in September, according to official data released on Thursday.
The September collection remained above the Rs 2 lakh crore mark for the third consecutive month. Central GST (CGST) contributed Rs 37,762 crore, while State GST (SGST) stood at Rs 45,363 crore and Integrated GST (IGST) amounted to Rs 1,20,396 crore.
Net GST revenue after refunds increased 18.1 per cent year-on-year to Rs 1,76,520 crore during the month. Gross domestic revenue also recorded a 10.1 per cent increase, rising from Rs 1,25,334 crore to Rs 1,37,996 crore.
Cumulative gross GST collections during the first six months of the current financial year, from April to September, reached Rs 12,46,278 crore, representing an 11.6 per cent increase compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.
Import-related tax collections were a significant contributor to the growth. Gross GST revenue from imports rose 29 per cent to Rs 62,604 crore. Domestic GST revenue also increased 9.3 per cent to Rs 1,37,249 crore, compared with Rs 1,25,570 crore in August 2025.
At the same time, GST refunds saw a substantial rise during the month. Refund payouts increased 67.9 per cent year-on-year to Rs 31,795 crore, against Rs 18,935 crore in the corresponding period last year.
The latest figures follow GST collections of Rs 1,99,853 crore in August 2026, which were 14.8 per cent higher than the year-ago period.
Meanwhile, the GST Council meeting scheduled for October 7 is expected to focus largely on administrative and process-related reforms rather than major changes to GST rates. The Council is likely to review the implementation of the rate rationalisation undertaken over the past year.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also indicated that the meeting will consider areas linked to GST 2.0, including e-invoicing and rules governing input tax credit.
