Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad arrested an alleged snatcher following an encounter during a checking operation in the Indirapuram area, recovering a stolen motorcycle, a pistol and ammunition from his possession.
According to police, the suspect was riding towards the Kanawani Pulia area when officers signalled him to stop. Instead of complying, he allegedly turned his motorcycle around and attempted to escape before opening fire at the police team.
The officers retaliated in self-defence, during which the suspect suffered a gunshot injury. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to a hospital for treatment.
The accused was identified as 23-year-old Munasir alias Munajir, son of Moin Ahmed and a resident of Garima Garden in Sahibabad.
Police said they recovered a 315-bore pistol, one empty cartridge, one live cartridge, a motorcycle suspected to have been stolen and a piece of yellow metal from him.
During questioning, police alleged that Munasir disclosed his involvement in several chain and mobile phone-snatching cases across Ghaziabad and other parts of the Delhi-NCR region. Investigators said he allegedly used different scooters and motorcycles while carrying out the crimes.
Police also claimed that the accused admitted to his alleged involvement in a chain-snatching incident in Indirapuram around two weeks ago. Officials, however, said these claims and the disclosures made during interrogation would be verified through the ongoing investigation and other available evidence.
ACP Police Suryabali Maurya said the suspect was travelling from the direction of the Kanawani culvert when the police team attempted to stop him. He allegedly turned back and tried to flee before firing at the officers, prompting retaliatory firing.
The suspect was injured in the exchange and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment, police said.
According to officials, more than a dozen cases have previously been registered against the accused in different parts of the Delhi-NCR. These include cases related to robbery, snatching, theft and alleged violations of the Arms Act.
Police said the recovered firearm, ammunition and motorcycle are being examined as part of the investigation. Further legal proceedings have been initiated, while investigators are also looking into the accused’s possible involvement in other incidents reported in the region.
