Four students died and another was critically injured after entering a 12-foot-deep water tank at Vrindavan Gurukulam in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district on Wednesday. Authorities suspect a presence of toxic gas inside.
The incident occurred at Vrindavan Gurukulam, a residential educational institution where students live and study. According to preliminary information, five students entered the tank and failed to return.
Those present at the institution subsequently managed to pull the students out of the tank. All five were rushed to a hospital, where four were declared dead. The fifth student remains under treatment in critical condition.
Police teams reached the institution and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The exact cause of the students losing consciousness inside the tank is yet to be established, with the suspected presence of toxic gas being examined as part of the investigation.
Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said the incident was reported from the Vrindavan police station area.
According to the SSP, the water tank inside the institution had been emitting a foul smell. Students had entered it to clean the tank.
Kumar said one student initially entered the tank but did not come out. Four other students then entered in an attempt to follow him, but they too failed to emerge.
People present at the institution subsequently attempted to rescue the students and managed to pull them out of the tank.
Police and other authorities are currently at the site and examining the tank and surrounding circumstances to determine what caused the students to collapse.
The investigation is underway, and further details are awaited.
