Four passengers were killed and three others seriously injured after a Volvo bus collided head-on with a trailer on the Gorakhpur Link Expressway in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar district early Friday morning.
The crash occurred at around 5:30 a.m. near kilometre 85 of the expressway, within the limits of Jaitpur police station. The impact triggered a rescue operation after local residents reached the spot and alerted the authorities.
Police teams soon arrived and, with assistance from villagers, helped evacuate passengers trapped inside the bus. The injured were taken to the Community Health Centre in Nagpur for initial treatment.
Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Tejveer Singh said the police received information about the collision through UP-112 shortly after 5:30 a.m.
According to police, four of the injured passengers succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment. Three others, who were in serious condition, were referred to Medical College Sadarpur for further medical care.
A preliminary inquiry has indicated that the bus was operated by Tegra Express and was travelling from Delhi towards Darbhanga in Bihar.
Police suspect that the bus driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, potentially causing the vehicle to veer into the path of the trailer. Officials, however, said the exact cause of the crash would be established only after a detailed investigation.
Authorities are also working to establish the identities of those killed and injured in the accident.
The incident comes weeks after another deadly bus accident in Uttar Pradesh, when a passenger bus caught fire in the Jewar area of Greater Noida in September, killing nine people. Around 30 passengers were reportedly rescued from that vehicle.
That bus was travelling from Delhi's Kashmere Gate towards Mahoba when it caught fire. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President had expressed condolences following the deaths.
