A fire broke out at a luxury hotel in Tarapith, a popular pilgrimage destination in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, early Tuesday, triggering panic among guests. Firefighters and police brought the blaze under control.
The fire erupted at around 4 a.m. in a room on the hotel’s second floor. According to preliminary findings by the fire department, the blaze originated in the bed of room number 201, before thick black smoke spread to other rooms and surrounding areas.
Firefighters and police personnel rushed to the hotel after receiving information about the incident. They worked to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.
The hotel is a private luxury property situated along the road connecting Rampurhat with Tarapith. Its open surroundings reportedly helped emergency personnel access the site promptly.
Cause of fire under investigation
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
Officials are examining whether an electrical short circuit triggered the blaze or whether another factor was responsible. Fire department personnel are also checking the hotel’s fire safety arrangements, including whether firefighting equipment was adequately installed and functioning properly.
Although the fire has been brought under control, the full extent of the damage remains unclear.
Fresh concerns over hotel fire safety
The incident has renewed concerns about fire safety at hotels and lodges in Tarapith, which attracts large numbers of pilgrims and tourists.
In August, a deadly hotel fire in the pilgrimage town claimed nine lives. Another fire subsequently broke out in the kitchen of a hotel in nearby Rampurhat, also in Birbhum district, though that incident resulted in no casualties.
Following the earlier incidents, the district administration conducted inspections of hotels across the district to assess their safety arrangements. Some establishments were also ordered to shut down over safety concerns.
Tuesday’s fire has once again brought the safety of private hospitality establishments in the region under scrutiny. The ongoing investigation is expected to establish the cause of the blaze and determine whether the hotel complied with prescribed fire safety requirements.
