Heavy Rain Forecast for 11 Tamil Nadu Districts Today, Temperatures May Rise

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely at isolated places across 11 Tamil Nadu districts and Karaikal on Wednesday, according to the Meteorological Department.

The districts under the heavy-rain forecast are Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Tiruchirappalli.

Thunderstorms in these areas could be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.

Despite the possibility of heavy showers, maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu are expected to remain above normal on Wednesday, with temperatures in some places potentially exceeding the normal level by up to four degrees Celsius.

Moderate rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and gusty winds is also likely in several other parts of the state, including areas along the Western Ghats as well as northern, central and southern districts.

Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi are among the areas that could receive moderate showers. Puducherry is also expected to experience moderate rain with thunderstorms. Wind speeds in these areas could reach 40 to 50 kmph.

Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is possible at a few locations.

For Thursday, October 1, heavy rain is forecast at isolated places in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts. Thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are also likely in these areas.

Other parts of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, may receive light to moderate rainfall on Thursday, with thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds accompanying some spells.

The weather activity has been attributed to an atmospheric circulation over northern Tamil Nadu and adjoining southern coastal Andhra Pradesh, extending up to around 1.5 km above sea level.

A trough also extends from southern Telangana to the Gulf of Mannar through Rayalaseema, northern Tamil Nadu and adjoining southern coastal Andhra Pradesh at an altitude of around 0.9 km.

Meanwhile, a deep depression that was located over the northern Andaman Sea and adjoining Myanmar coast on September 28 moved north-northwestwards and crossed the Myanmar coast east of Kyaikto between 7.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m.

The latest forecast indicates that heavy rainfall will remain confined to isolated locations, while several other parts of the region could experience lighter rain and periods of moderate thunderstorms over the next two days.
