External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday praised Captain Smit Machchhar for his “extraordinary courage” and “remarkable presence of mind” during the mid-air crisis aboard flydubai flight FZ1073.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said Machchhar displayed exceptional courage despite being in grave danger and expressed his wishes for the pilot’s speedy recovery.

The incident occurred aboard the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, which was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia after a violent confrontation in the cockpit. Machchhar was seriously injured during the incident but continued to act to protect those aboard the aircraft. Reports said his actions helped passengers and crew gain access to the cockpit and restrain the attacker before the aircraft made an emergency landing.

The Ministry of External Affairs also praised the pilot, saying he was safe and receiving medical treatment.

“We salute the bravery of Captain Smit Machchhar, who, inspite of being gravely injured, showed remarkable courage that saved the lives of many. He is receiving medical attention and is safe. We wish and pray for his speedy recovery. The nation proudly stands with him and his family,” the MEA said in a post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier described Machchhar as a “HERO”, praising his courage and determination in protecting the passengers and crew.

“Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO. In the face of the gravest danger and despite being seriously injured, he showed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect the lives of others. His valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy,” Modi said.

“India is proud of Captain Machchhar,” he added, while praying for his speedy recovery and good health.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar for what he described as “extraordinary bravery” during the incident. Netanyahu said the Indian captain’s actions helped prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome despite his injuries.

Machchhar’s actions have drawn international attention following the incident involving FZ1073, which was carrying 174 passengers and was ultimately diverted to Saudi Arabia. The circumstances surrounding the cockpit confrontation remain under investigation.

The Indian Embassy in Riyadh has also been monitoring Machchhar’s condition and maintaining contact with his family, with the pilot reported to be stable while receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia.
