Intelligence agencies have raised concerns that drug trafficking networks may be attempting to fuel unrest in parts of Northeast India to disrupt security operations and restore narcotics smuggling routes affected.

According to intelligence officials, intensified operations by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other security agencies have disrupted trafficking networks operating along routes connected to Myanmar. Officials suspect that criminal groups may seek to exploit regional tensions and divert law enforcement resources away from anti-narcotics operations.

An Intelligence Bureau official said several northeastern states remain vulnerable to unrest, creating opportunities for trafficking organisations to exploit gaps in security.

The official explained that maintaining stability allows security agencies to concentrate on monitoring cross-border movement, intercepting narcotics consignments and dismantling trafficking networks. During periods of violence, however, personnel and resources may be redirected towards maintaining public order, potentially weakening surveillance of smuggling routes.

Despite operational difficulties posed by mountainous terrain, remote border areas and riverine routes, Indian security agencies have reportedly made progress in disrupting narcotics networks linked to Myanmar.

Officials said these operations have affected the movement of illegal drugs into the Northeast and their subsequent distribution to other parts of India.

Intelligence sources also expressed concern over the possible use of misinformation and inflammatory campaigns to aggravate existing tensions. They suspect that trafficking groups could attempt to create instability to regain access to routes that have come under greater scrutiny.

However, the specific groups allegedly involved in such activities and the evidence linking them to attempts to provoke violence have not been publicly disclosed.

Officials warned that prolonged instability could create opportunities for other cross-border criminal networks involved in arms trafficking and illegal movement across international borders.

Myanmar-Linked Drug Networks Under Pressure

Security agencies have identified heroin and Yaba tablets among the narcotics trafficked through routes connected to Myanmar. Yaba is a stimulant drug containing methamphetamine and caffeine.

According to officials, recent enforcement operations have disrupted the supply chains used by trafficking syndicates, increasing pressure on criminal networks operating in the region.

One significant operation involved the seizure of Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 50 crore. The NCB arrested two suspected operatives in Guwahati in connection with the case.

Investigators have also identified additional suspects who remain at large, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend them.

Officials believe that repeated seizures and arrests have made it increasingly difficult for trafficking groups to maintain their established distribution networks.

Security Agencies Alert to Potential Disruptions

Intelligence officials have also flagged the possibility of criminal networks attempting to exploit political developments and election-related security deployments in the region, including anticipated electoral activity in Manipur in 2027.

They cautioned that large-scale public events and political mobilisation can place additional demands on law enforcement agencies, potentially creating opportunities for organised criminal groups.

The Centre has repeatedly emphasised its commitment to combating narcotics trafficking, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah calling for sustained action against drug networks operating within India and across its borders.

Officials said coordination among intelligence agencies, the NCB and state police forces would remain essential to preventing the re-establishment of trafficking routes.

While intelligence sources have raised concerns about possible attempts to provoke unrest, no publicly disclosed evidence currently establishes that particular incidents of violence in the Northeast were organised or financed by drug cartels.

Authorities are expected to maintain surveillance of trafficking networks and investigate any credible links between organised crime, misinformation campaigns and attempts to disrupt security operations.
