The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 1.312 kg of amphetamine, estimated to be worth around ₹1.05 crore in the illicit market, from a woman travelling on a train at Nagpur Railway Station.
The seizure was carried out by the DRI's Nagpur Regional Unit under the Mumbai Zone following specific intelligence about suspected interstate drug trafficking.
DRI officials intercepted the woman on September 27 while she was travelling aboard the Hazrat Nizamuddin-KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express (Train No. 22692).
During a search of her luggage, officials discovered a concealed compartment inside her suitcase. The compartment had been constructed behind the inner fabric lining using hard cardboard.
Two packages wrapped in blue carbon paper were found hidden inside the compartment. A field drug-testing kit indicated that the substance was amphetamine.
The two packets together contained 1.312 kg of the drug, which the DRI estimated to have an illicit market value of approximately ₹1.05 crore.
The contraband was seized under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The passenger was arrested under the same law and produced before the Holiday Court in Nagpur on September 27.
The DRI said the operation was part of its continuing efforts to identify and disrupt interstate narcotics trafficking networks.
In a separate operation on September 30, DRI officials seized 4.9 kg of cocaine at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. The consignment was estimated to be worth approximately ₹24.5 crore in the illicit market.
The cocaine was allegedly concealed inside chocolate tubes carried in the baggage of a passenger who had arrived in Hyderabad from Qatar.
According to the DRI, officials became suspicious after noticing that the chocolate tubes appeared unusually heavy during baggage screening. A subsequent examination led to the discovery of the concealed cocaine.
The two operations form part of the DRI's ongoing action against suspected organised drug trafficking networks.
