The Delhi Police has registered three FIRs in connection with protests held in the national capital demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the SIR.

Two FIRs were registered at Parliament Street police station and another at Connaught Place police station. The cases invoke Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with disobedience of an order issued by a public servant.

Police said no individual or organisation has been named as an accused in the FIRs so far. However, details of organisers and groups that proposed or participated in the demonstrations have been included in the case records.

The FIRs followed protests across central Delhi on Friday, when activists from opposition parties, student organisations and civil society groups attempted to move towards Jantar Mantar. Police had denied permission for the proposed demonstration and deployed additional security and barricades in the area.

Several hundred protesters were detained as they attempted to cross police barricades and reach the designated protest area. Police subsequently transported those detained to different stations across the city. Reports put the number detained at around 550, while police sources cited higher figures during the course of the day.

Among those detained were former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Aam Aadmi Party leaders and activists, AISA president Neha Bora, Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav, and members of Left-backed student organisations and the Congress youth wing.

The demonstrations were organised amid allegations by protesters concerning irregularities in the SIR exercise and demands for accountability from the Election Commission. These remain allegations raised by the protesters and have not been established by the FIRs themselves.

Delhi Police had earlier imposed restrictions around Jantar Mantar and adjoining parts of central Delhi, citing the proposed gathering and the absence of permission for the demonstration. Security was stepped up and movement was regulated around Parliament Street, Connaught Place and other nearby areas.

The protests in Delhi were part of wider demonstrations against Kumar, with similar demands raised at a gathering in Mumbai on October 2.
