Delhi Police have arrested five people in connection with the alleged robbery of Rs 19.50 lakh in cash in the North Delhi area and recovered Rs 9 lakh along with an iPhone allegedly purchased using the stolen money.
The robbery took place on September 30 when two men travelling on separate motorcycles were allegedly intercepted and robbed on the Rani Jhansi flyover.
According to police, the victims worked for a businessman in Chandni Chowk and were carrying the cash after leaving the area. A man working in Chandni Chowk allegedly tracked their movements and later planned the robbery with four associates from Ghaziabad.
Police said the accused first intercepted the victims near Kashmere Gate and assaulted them while attempting to take the cash. The victims managed to get away with the help of members of the public but did not make a PCR call at the time.
The suspects allegedly followed them and intercepted them again on the Rani Jhansi flyover, where the victims were assaulted and the cash was taken.
A team led by North Delhi DCP Niharika Bhatt subsequently investigated the case and arrested five suspects. Police said Rs 9 lakh in cash and an iPhone bought with the alleged proceeds of the robbery were recovered.
Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend other people suspected of being involved in the crime.
In a separate case linked to the Kashmere Gate area, police had arrested two men aged 21 and 24 and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the alleged killing of a cash collection agent during an armed robbery.
The incident occurred on September 24, when the victim, identified as Prabhat, was returning home with his nephew Sachin after collecting payments from shops in Gandhi Nagar Market.
According to police, four armed men intercepted their e-rickshaw near an underpass at around 7.20 p.m., snatched their cash bag and attacked Prabhat, Sachin and another passenger with a knife when they resisted.
Prabhat was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, while Sachin and the other passenger sustained injuries.
DCP Niharika Bhatt said investigators traced a Maruti Swift that had made a sharp U-turn near the underpass during the incident. However, the registration number displayed on the vehicle was found to be fake.
