Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey on Monday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing its leadership of using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his family.
His remarks came amid a political controversy over Kharge’s statement at a Congress event in Patna on Sunday, when he responded to an audience member who said that Prime Minister Modi would not leave power.
Kharge reportedly replied, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi’s father will have to go), prompting criticism from BJP leaders over the language used.
Dubey Invokes Political Leaders’ Defence of Indira Gandhi
Speaking to reporters, Dubey criticised the Congress leadership and recalled how Indian political leaders had defended former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi against disrespectful remarks made by foreign leaders following the 1971 Bangladesh War.
He referred to former US President Richard Nixon and then National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger, claiming that leaders across party lines had objected to derogatory comments about Gandhi in Parliament.
“In this very Parliament, in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, leaders from Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Lal Krishna Advani defended her, saying that she was the Prime Minister of the country and that we would not tolerate such disrespectful and degrading remarks,” Dubey said.
He added that some leaders had even indicated they would be willing to sever relations with the United States rather than accept disrespect towards India’s Prime Minister.
BJP MP Accuses Congress of Crossing Political Boundaries
Dubey alleged that the language being used against Modi and his mother was unacceptable, arguing that political disagreements should not extend to personal attacks on the country’s highest elected executive office.
“We never went abroad and said anything against our own country. But the kind of abusive, filthy and degrading language being used against the Honourable Prime Minister, who represents our country, and about his mother—what has his mother done wrong?” he said.
The BJP MP went on to accuse the Congress of struggling to come to terms with repeated electoral defeats. He claimed that the party had lost around 100 elections and believed it would remain in the Opposition for another 10 to 20 years.
“That is why I said yesterday, and I am saying it again today, that the Congress of today is a gathering of mad people, led by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi,” Dubey said.
Dubey Questions Rahul Gandhi’s Defamation Case Acquittal
The BJP MP also commented on Rahul Gandhi’s acquittal in a defamation case, questioning the allegations involved and referring to remarks Gandhi had allegedly made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“What case are we talking about? It is a case about abusive language, isn’t it? He had abused the Honourable Home Minister. That is what the case is about, right?” Dubey said.
He questioned whether the use of insulting language against leaders of rival political parties was consistent with democratic conduct.
“In a democracy, people express their views. They put forward their views strongly, back their claims, and provide solid evidence. Do they resort to abusive language? Only those who have no strength left resort to abuse,” he said.
Dubey further alleged that political groups unable to secure electoral victories through public support resorted to intimidation and disruptive tactics, describing such behaviour as “thuggery”.
His comments added to the political confrontation between the BJP and Congress following Kharge’s remarks in Patna, with leaders from the two parties trading accusations over political language and conduct.
