Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel praised Flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his actions during an in-flight emergency, saying the Gujarati-origin pilot had made both the state and the country proud.
Machchhar was reportedly attacked during Flydubai flight FZ1073 but continued to act to protect the passengers and crew despite sustaining serious injuries. The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
In a post on X, Patel praised the pilot’s courage and said his actions helped prevent a major tragedy and protect the lives of the 174 passengers on board.
The Chief Minister described Machchhar as a proud Indian and highlighted his Gujarati roots, saying his conduct reflected courage and resilience. Patel also expressed his respect for the pilot’s actions and wished him a speedy and complete recovery.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar, describing him as a “hero” for showing courage and determination despite being seriously injured.
Modi said the pilot’s actions helped protect those on board and prevent a major tragedy. He also expressed pride in Machchhar and wished him a speedy recovery, renewed strength and good health.
