Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot injured while responding to an alleged mid-air attack aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, is recovering well and responding positively to treatment, the Indian Embassy in the UAE said.
The embassy said it was in regular contact with Machchhar's family and local authorities and was providing assistance to facilitate his recovery.
“Indian braveheart Capt. Smit remains under excellent medical care and is recovering well,” the mission said in a post on X. It also thanked the UAE government for the care being provided to the pilot and said it was joining his family and well-wishers in praying for his recovery.
Machchhar was injured on Wednesday while operating a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Israel. According to reports, another pilot on board attacked him inside the cockpit, leaving him seriously injured as the aircraft was diverted during the ensuing emergency.
Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and help restrain the attacker. Despite his injuries, he remained involved in efforts to bring the situation under control until the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Machchhar over a video call on Friday and praised the pilot for his courage, composure and presence of mind during the incident.
During the conversation, Modi asked about Machchhar's health and said people across India were praying for his speedy recovery. He also praised the pilot's actions, saying his courage had helped protect passengers and crew members.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with people and public figures in India and abroad praising Machchhar for his actions during the in-flight emergency.
Machchhar's family has also said he is stable and receiving treatment. The Indian Embassy said it would continue coordinating with the family and UAE authorities as he recovers.
